Artist Statement/ Story Behind “Protector”:

This piece is very special to me because my husband and I tried and tried for so long to have a baby girl, and after miscarriage after miscarriage and false pregnancy when we finally did get pregnant I just didn’t believe it.

What if this is just another miscarriage too? I thought.

But when I finally held her, my little newborn baby girl in my arms for the first time all I wanted to do was gaze into her eyes. I just couldn’t believe I was finally holding my baby girl.

She is finally here!

I still remember her sweet, loving, and joyful eyes looking up at me and feeling so overjoyed with raw emotion that this is my baby girl, she is here, this is happening… I am holding my baby girl in my arms!

I love staring into her sweet and loving eyes every day. She is now 6 years old, and I still get lost in those joyful eyes! She is so perfect!

I knew I had to get this loving feeling and emotion onto canvas, so I searched and searched for a photograph that could show the love I felt for her at that moment. That love that keeps growing! I eventually found one. But, it was not quite right, because it didn’t have the baby cub in it... so I painted the mama bear anyways.

At first, I started to paint just the mama bear with realistic colors, and neon surrounding her at the time, I didn’t find what I needed, so I stopped! I let it go! And it sat on the easel for about a month or so while I worked on other art. I mean, I had to keep working! But when I was going through the once-in-a-blue-moon organising routine of my chaotic art studio, from working day and night to get things ready for each event. I came across the unfinished bear painting, which was behind other canvases by now. Then I asked myself and posed the question as a video blog if I should delete this painting, by gessoing over it, like it never even happened, because it just didn’t find its place in my heart for me with the single bear. So after recording, I went to bed, and woke up, and my baby girl gave me the biggest hug ever and wrapped her leg around me as she looked up and said, “I love you, mama!” I knew then what the mama was missing! Her baby girl wrapped around her leg, too!

I then remembered how much love and joy my little girl brings me, she’s so happy and smiles with vibrant energy. And that’s when I decided to paint with bright and joyful colors on their fur too, to match her energy instead. And she makes my heart sparkle, so we decided on genuine copper leafing on the bears, and she wanted to help. So we did it together.

I painted with the memory and all the energy of the day she was born, when I held my baby girl and gazed into those sweet, pure eyes. I painted with the love for one another as she grows up, and how I am grateful to witness it every day.

I have such “Devotion” to her, I would do anything and everything to keep her safe from harm. I will take care of her forever because she is my baby girl and I am her mother.
